General Comments About Distance Learning
Distance learning is the greatest opportunity of our time. Traditional classroom courses require long transit time (after a long day at work), travel expenses, class time, inflexible hours, registration lines, and many other stresses on our lives (have you tried to park at a college campus lately?). Distance learning allows you to have the same fine education, but fit at your convenience into the hectic, ever changing patterns of our lives. The single greatest drawback to distance learning is the lack of interaction with fellow students. If you feel this is a significant problem there are solutions: create a study group, attend a local BIH seminar, ask a local Aromatherapist to be a mentor, etc. However, most people find that with aromatherapy, the time spent in independent study and the experience of Essential Oils is the most valuable. Often, it is the choice of Essential Oils for use in your own life that is your first hand experience.
Distance learning is flexible. This does not mean that you should be undisciplined. You must create a plan for accomplishing your goals. When you receive a distance learning course, evaluate the nature of the materials, the suggested exercises, and your schedule. If you wish to do one lesson per week – set that as your goal and set aside time. This is something you are doing for yourself and it is important. If something comes up, you can make changes, but keep to your goals. Your one-to-one tutor is available to help you meet your goals. Remember, there are no deadlines which removes any pressure to complete the course by a set date.
Your Tutor
Your tutor is available to assist with any questions or problems encountered throughout your studies. Email is a preferred method to communicate with your tutor. It is fast with no time barriers but still allows you time to put your ideas in writing and it gives your tutor time to consider how best to respond, and if necessary – use current references to give you a complete answer. Of course, regular mail is available.
Course Layout
This course is presented in three modules with six lessons per module. Each lesson will require you to complete essential oil profiles. It is suggested that you keep these profiles together in a separate binder. The student is encouraged to do extra reading, and a list of resources is provided in the book list. The student is also encouraged to experience essential oils. Please carefully read all safety information and the specific cautions for each individual essential oil and carrier oil before you use them in any way.
At the end of each lesson there is a test paper and at the end of each module there is an exam. These can be emailed but the Final Exam must be submitted by hard copy with a co-signature that it is your own work.
